South Jefferson Students Earn Top Spots in Regional Writing Contest

Two fourth-grade students from the South Jefferson Central School District earned top rankings at the Greater Thousand Islands Literacy Council’s Young Writers’ Celebration held on April 1, 2026, at Carthage High School.
The annual event, which attracted over 500 entries from students in grades 1–9 across Lewis and Jefferson counties, challenged young authors to explore their future aspirations through the theme "My Dream Job."
Audrey Hazard, a fourth-grade student at Mannsville Manor Elementary, secured first place in her grade level. For her winning entry, Hazard was awarded a blue ribbon, a new book and a gift certificate to Walmart. She is the daughter of Ashley Phelps and Russell Hazard.
Marlowe DiFabion, representing Wilson Elementary, also earned a place on the podium, taking home third place overall for the fourth-grade division.
In addition to the award winners, Mannsville Elementary students Siena Baker and Leah Sperry were recognized for their participation in the contest, contributing to the district’s strong showing at the regional celebration.
The Greater Thousand Islands Literacy Council is a professional organization dedicated to promoting literacy throughout Lewis and Jefferson counties, as well as the Old Forge area. The Young Writers’ Celebration serves as its premier event to foster a love for writing and storytelling in local youth.
