South Jefferson students spread holiday cheer to WWII Veteran on his 105th birthday

South Jefferson Central School District eighth-grade students are combining history, gratitude, and holiday spirit by creating handmade birthday cards for Louis Tanzer, the oldest living World War II veteran in Massachusetts, who will celebrate his 105th birthday on Christmas Day.
The idea was sparked by eighth-grade social studies teacher Alyssa Freeland, who learned about Tanzer through a friend while her students were studying World War II. Recognizing the opportunity to bring history to life, Freeland invited her students to honor Tanzer while deepening their understanding of the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation.
“We talk about World War II in class, but this project helped students realize that history isn’t just something in a textbook,” said Freeland. “This was a chance for them to connect what they’re learning to real life while also spreading kindness during the holiday season.”
Freeland later opened the card-making project to the entire district, allowing more students the opportunity to participate in honoring Tanzer’s extraordinary life and service.
Louis Tanzer was born on December 25, 1920. Though eligible for a deferment during World War II, he chose to voluntarily enlist in the United States Marine Corps, joining his two closest friends who each enlisted in different branches of the military, united by a shared commitment to serve their country.
Tanzer rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant in the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing and served in the central Pacific, including the Ellice Islands (Funafuti) and the Marshall Islands (Majuro Atoll). He also served aboard the USS Altamaha, a Liberty Ship that supported critical operations throughout the Pacific Theater. His service exemplified the selflessness, bravery and quiet courage that defined his generation.
Tanzer has lived in Massachusetts since the 1950s, where he raised his family and became a beloved member of his community.
For South Jefferson students, the project has been an opportunity to say thank you to a living piece of history while embracing the true meaning of the giving season.
