10/23/09 - Submitted by Coach Steve Robinson
It was a great idea, but by the end of the game the pink that the Comets and Spartans were wearing had been turned to brown in a very muddy and miserable game.  Although the Spartans won the game 2 to 1 in overtime, the bigger news was that through donations and the teams giving $1 per player to wear pink - and the official for the 8th grade game gave part of his earnings as a donation - $308 was raised through this effort which will be donated in the names of each of the 7th and 8th grade Carthage and South Jefferson girls' soccer players to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Cure.

If you had planned to attend the games yesterday and make a donation, but were chased away by the bad weather, you may still make donations.  Please put donations in the envelope in my mailbox in the middle school or send it through the interschool mail and I will forward it to Casey Porter who was the driving force in this awesome endeavor!

Thank you to everyone who either donated or helped with this event!

Last week Casey Porter, an athlete on the 8th grade soccer team approached me at practice and shared with me that she and her family had noticed that the NFL players were wearing pink in their games the previous Sunday.  She learned that it was for breast cancer awareness month.  She proposed that we (meaning the team, not me!) might wear pink headbands during our game with Carthage that week.  After thinking things over we decided to shoot for our final game which will be on at 4:00 on Thursday, Oct 22 also against Carthage on the varsity and jv fields behind the middle school .  Last week I spoke to the Carthage coach prior to our game there and told her of our plan to wear not only pink headbands, but pink shorts or socks as well.  (We have received approval from the soccer board of officials to wear a color other than our uniform color).   Following the game Casey delivered an envelope of pink headbands to the  Coach Logan for the Carthage team to wear when they come here next week.  The plan is to have players donate $1 for the privilege of wearing pink in the game (like the teachers and the Denim for Dollars).  There will also be pink ribbons available for a donation of any amount for the spectators to wear.  The 7th grade teams from each school will also be taking part in this event. All donations will be delivered by Casey in the name of the Carthage and South Jefferson modified soccer teams to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.    In an email to me Tuesday Coach Logan  told me that her girls are very excited about the "pink game" and the fact that it doesn't really matter that pink and red (their jersey color) clash!

It is really amazing to see how a small idea from an 8th grade girl has gained a life of its own.  I am very proud of Casey and am looking forward to what may very well be one of the greatest experiences in my 28 years of coaching.
